Female Pilots To Celebrate Centennial By "Paying It Forward"

By Mary Grady,
Contributing editor

Around the world, women plan to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the first time a woman earned a pilot certificate by taking a woman or girl for her first flight in a general-aviation aircraft during the week of March 6 to 12. Raymonde De Laroche, a French balloonist, learned to fly a fixed-wing aircraft and was the first woman to receive a pilot certificate, on March 8, 1910. So far, pilots from the U.S., France, Spain, Mongolia, and many other countries have signed up to participate in what they hope will be a world-record-setting event. The Ninety-Nines, Women in Aviation International, the International Society of Woman Airline Pilots, EAA, and other groups have signed on to help with the effort.

 EAA AVIATION CENTER, OSHKOSH, Wis. - (April 21, 2010)

The clock is ticking toward the July 26 opening day of EAA AirVenture Oshkosh, "The World's Greatest Aviation Celebration," which is now fewer than 100 days away.  The 58th edition of EAA's fly-in convention takes place July 26 throughAugust 1st at Wittman Regional Airport in Oshkosh.
Even three months before the official opening, tremendous excitement has already been generated by some of the featured programs and attractions.
Those confirmed events already include:
*A weeklong Salute to Veterans, with aircraft and guests that highlight service and duty  to country;
*A rare night air show at Oshkosh on Saturday, July 31;
*An unmatched gathered of new innovations of electric-powered aircraft;
*75th anniversary of the Douglas DC-3 / C-47  aircraft massive flyin.
*75th anniversary of the B-17 bomber reunion.

*50th anniversary of the Piper Cherokee aircraft reunion flyin.

"The aircraft attractions alone make this year at Oshkosh one that has never been seen before and a gathering that won't be re-created ever again," said Tom Poberezny, EAA chairman/president and AirVenture chairman.  "As we head into the final three months of preparations, we know there will be even more major highlights to announce and reasons to again say that you've got to be here!"

Featured entertainment this year includes the legendary band Chicago for the opening night concert on Monday, July 26, presented by Ford Motor Company; and actor Gary Sinise's "Lt. Dan Band" returning to Theater in the Woods on Friday, July 30, presented by EAA in partnership
with the EAA Warbirds of America and Disabled American Veterans.  Those concerts, as well as other features to be announced and the nightly
Fly-In Theater, are included with AirVenture admission.

      In 2010, there are a number of new options for EAA AirVenture visitors to make their preparations for Oshkosh even easier.  As in previous years, AirVenture admission can be purchased in advance online at www.airventure.org.  In addition, Camp Scholler drive-in camping credentials are available online, as well as an easy-to-buy weekend (July 30 through August 1) package for aviation enthusiasts who are not currently EAA members that allow them to become part of EAA and enjoy all the spectacular highlights on those days.

Site improvements to benefit EAA members and visitors also continue in 2010.  Those at Oshkosh this summer will find additional shower and indoor toilet facilities, expanded indoor exhibit areas, a limited number of Camp Scholler sites with electric and water hookups, and larger trams for transportation throughout the grounds.

"There are a number of announcements coming in the next few weeks that will add to the list of highlights at Oshkosh this year, so now is the time to plan your trip to aviation's annual family reunion," Poberezny said.  "Whether you're looking for knowledge at the forums and workshops, the latest in aircraft and aviation parts, marvelous aerial and ground entertainment, or a great family event, AirVenture is the place to be this summer."

EAA AirVenture annually draws participants from more than 70 nations and in excess of 10,000 airplanes, including more than 2,500 showplanes.  The event includes 700 exhibitors with the latest aviation innovations; nearly 1,000 forums, workshops and seminars covering the entire world of flight; daily afternoon air shows featuring the world's finest aerobatic performers; up-close sessions with top aviation personalities; and the gathering of aviation enthusiasts from around the

Past Events (October 2009)

At some flyins' when you arrive, they want not only your money, but the shirt right off your back as per say, and that's excluding those solo events. When time arrived for the Syracuse event to take place, a small US of A town couldn't have produced more especially for those who were trying to prove who's who in hospitality.  All who arrived not only received free T-shirts  and free meals, but free gas as well. OK!, the 100LL was $2 per gallon, but at that price, ya might as well say it was free!

The October 3rd, 2009 event occured on a near picture perfect day allowing the towns-people to present their very own chili cook off for all and I will say, hmm, hmm, hmm!  :-)  And lets not forget that brand new tarmac and celebrated 18,36 runway. Thank you Syracuse, KS for your extremely warm welcome.  Look for Album 14 in the drop down menu of the Photo gallery for all to see.
